Teacher Accidentally Shoots Self in Leg at School:

A Utah elementary school teacher who was carrying a concealed firearm at school accidentally shot herself in the leg when the weapon discharged in a faculty bathroom shortly before classes started Thursday morning, officials said. Granite School District spokesman Ben Horsley said the teacher at Westbrook Elementary School, in the Salt Lake City suburb of Taylorsville, was severely injured when the bullet entered and exited her leg, and she was rushed to a hospital. She was in good condition and alert at the hospital by midmorning, Horsley said.

No other faculty or students witnessed the shooting, but they might have heard the gunshot or seen the teacher as she was taken out of the school to the hospital, he said. Classes were continuing as usual, and crisis counselors were available, Horsley said. Officials were still investigating how the gun discharged. "This just appears at this point in time to be an accident," he said.

She had a CCW and I am sure went thru a training program to able to carry it onto the school property but I would like more details on exactly why it discharged in a bathroom. Fell from her holster? ..or why wasn't the safety on?..questions questions. Let's hope she can continue teaching or perhaps district policy might say something else.

Hope she heals and is allowed to return to her career.

But like Sarg stated, I'd like to know a bit more on how/why the "accident" occurred. There are no accidental discharges, only negligent ones.

accidental discharges > When I have them I want to be in the bathroom also. Then there was the officer that hung his gun on the door stop in the head (bathroom) so it would not fall out of this holster. It went off 2 times.

We don't need this kind of help.

No kidding.

You never remove your carry gun from it's holster unless you are on private property or intend to use it. If it is properly holstered, it doesn't matter if the safety is on or not. A safety is just a cruch anyway. This was a ND not an AD.

I don't carry in a holster! I use a belt clip . Sure would hate to drop it in the portapotty. Most weapon discharges occur when loading or unloading or when re holstering.

You know, it really hasn't got a whole lot of play here. No marches, no burning of buildings, short story on the news

The really funny part about Utah is that any state funded school has to follow the state laws, so having a gun in the school is not a real problem. However, having said that, I can see them asking for more training of those that have a CCW and are teachers or, since SLC is kinda stupid, trying to ban weapons in schools because of this incident.

I don't see that happening, but the idiocy of the people never ceases to amaze and I will not hold my breath about the outcome. But I do agree, that we as responsible gun holders, do not need this kind of publicity. Just because it is not in the news here, you can be sure that the Brady group will see this as a school shooting and just one more reason why guns should not be allowed not only in schools, but anywhere near civilian hands as we do not know how to handle these weapons properly. Bunch of useless whiny little piss bags.
