Default My Impression of Shooting the .500 S&W Magnum

First off here are the specification from Smith & Wesson's website for the Firearm that I fired.

Model: S&W500™
•Caliber: .500 S&W Magnum®
•Capacity: 5 Rounds
•Barrel Length: 10.5" / 26.7 cm
•Front Sight: Orange Ramp
•Rear Sight: Adjustable
•Grip: Synthetic
•Action: Single/Double Action
•Trigger: .312 Chrome with Overtravel Stop
•Hammer: Chrome Tear Drop with Pinned Sear
•Frame: X-Large - Exposed Hammer
•Finish: Matte
•Overall Length: 18" / 45.7 cm
•Material: Stainless Steel Frame
•Stainless Steel Cylinder
•Weight Empty: 79.3 oz / 2,248.2 g
•Purpose: Handgun Hunting

First off the size and the weight of this firearm is impressive. The ammunition we where shooting was Federal Premium 325 Grain Swift A-Frame. Cost per 20 rounds was $74.95. This is definitely not a gun to take to the range and shoot all day. The firearm is extremely accurate right out of the box. I was able to shoot a 1" group at 20 yards or so.

The firearm I shot has little if any more recoil than my S&W Model 29 .44 magnum. This big gun is built for the rounds it shoots and consequently is controllable for anyone of average strength.

The biggest thing I noticed with this firearm is the concussion you feel on your whole body when you shoot this beast.

This is one of the all time great handguns. Big, sturdy, fun to shoot, capable of taking about any kind of game in North America should you decide to use it in that capacity. But it comes at a price.

S&W's MSRP on the gun is $1599. The real world price of the gun I shot was around $1200.00. The ammo for this range trip was a total of $240.59.

So, if you have a couple thousand bucks sitting around, and you love to shoot big guns or hunt with revolvers, grab this Smith and Wesson 500 magnum. You won't be disappointed in it's appearance or performance.

I am glad to hear that the recoil was not bad.
:Likely due to the weight.

Seems to be a bit of a novelty firearms to me instead of a practical weapon but I am sur eit serves its purpose for those who want to hunt and limit themselves to a handgun
