You have to do it.

In the real world prone is n ot as workable as most people think.

Lots of undulations in terrain and you will often shoot into somehting you dindt realize was there.

kneeling ensure you can shoot/hit in undulating terrain

I think these drills are done mainly in open ground because it is easier to control, observe, and teach techniques.
If you find yourself in the open during an actual combat scenario, you have already made a few bad decisions that day

the ambusher gets to choose his kill zone.
So most ambushes can be expected to hit in an area with little cover.

You use microcover provided by the undulation in terrain which all terrain has.
The other part of your cover is your fire suppressing the enemy to cover your movement.
