I agree. I'm not got there yet either. I've done very well with my cheap optics. However, I do know it makes a difference. You do get what you pay for, and if you don't think a scope a can make a difference you'd be wrong. Clarity, less strain on the eye, and holding accuracy from repeated recoil, there is a difference. I've a cheap Barska $25 scope on one of my Ruger 10/22's, that thing is fantastic for $25. Would I suggest it for a .270 or 30.06, hell no.
I've got a middle of the road scope for my .300 Win Mag, and a cheaper but OK scope on my 30.06. I'd like someday to put the middle of the road scope on the 30.06 and get a real nice long range scope for my .300 Win Mag. Just can't seem to justify it though. As expensive as .300 Win Mag ammo is now days, it would probably cost me $40 in ammo to get it sighted in at 300 yards. I rarely have a purpose to use that one, so I'd prefer just to set it up at 300 yards. The 30.06 I just keep at 100 yards scope and 50 yards iron. I'd imagine I could set the 30.06 to 200 yards with the scope off the Win Mag.
